KATONAH, NY — On Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 4:00 pm, the 2010-11 Great Artists in the Music Room Series kicks off at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts with the Kuss Quartet. Celebrated the world over for their heavenly sound and impassioned playing, the Kuss Quartet – one of today’s finest European ensembles – makes its Caramoor debut with a program of quartet masterpieces. The ensemble pays homage to the intimate genre of music that flourished in Mozart’s time with sincere and impassioned interpretations of the composer’s String Quartet Nos. 17 and 21, and Haydn’s Quartet No. 25.
Great Artists in the Music Room – Moz(art) Moz(art) is a three-part fall series exploring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s more intimate and collaborative music through a beautiful selection of chamber and vocal works. The most enduringly loved composer of the Classical era, Mozart created pinnacles of the repertoire in every genre that he touched. His genius, his vision, and his prolific body of work have had a profound influence on subsequent Western art music. Featured artists are The Kuss Quartet, Caramoor Virtuosi, and The Orchestra of St. Luke’s
About the Kuss Quartet From Carnegie Hall in New York to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, from Wigmore Hall in London to the Berliner Philharmonie, the four musicians of the Kuss Quartet have been invited not only to the most celebrated international concert halls, but also to the most prestigious festivals, among them the Salzburg Festival, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, and the Edinburgh Festival.
The Kuss Quartet has given much thought on how to restore the string quartet to where it once stood: at the cutting edge of cultural and compositional life. They have been praised for their fresh approach – Music of the past, played as music of the present. As a result, it has succeeded in bringing new young audiences to concerts in new and unconventional venues.
The quartet plays a repertoire that spans from the Renaissance and Baroque through to the present day. It has studied the works of György Kurtág and Helmut Lachenmann with the composers themselves, and has additionally given workshops at the Hamburg Musikhochschule to its composition students.
