CARAMOOR INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009 SUMMER SEASON
CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND GENERAL DIRECTOR MICHAEL BARRETT ANNOUNCES SUMMERTIME FAMILY FUN EVENTS:
FIREWORKS! FAMILY CONCERTS! CARAMOOR AL FRESCO EVENTS! DANCING AT DUSK!
Katonah, New York - Michael Barrett, Caramoor's Chief Executive and General Director has announced special opportunities for families to enjoy great music, good fun, and quality time together during the 2009 Caramoor International Music Festival.
"Caramoor has always been a special place for the entire family," said Michael Barrett. "Recognizing that many area residents will be traveling less during these economic times, we took measures to include as many opportunities for families to enjoy music and the magnificent grounds here at Caramoor during the summer."
From Pyrotechnics to Prokofiev For the first time ever, Caramoor's Independence Day concert, Saturday, July 4 at 8:00pm, will end with a spectacular display of fireworks. The concert in the Venetian Theater, Pops, Patriots & Fireworks, features Broadway and concert star Darius de Haas along with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, conducted by Michael Barrett, for a celebration of great American music, including favorite Alan Menken hits from beloved Disney films, marches by John Philip Sousa, and music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and other greats. Following the concert, families will gather on the lawn for a dazzling display of pyrotechnics in the evening sky. Caramoor's caterer, Great Performances® will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs on the picnic lawns and children under 12 will be admitted for half price! On Saturday, July 25 at 4:00pm, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, conducted by Michael Barrett, will perform Prokofiev's masterpiece of music and storytelling, Peter and the Wolf. Eric Satie's brief and zany Sports and Divertisements kicks off this afternoon, exploring the musical worlds of tennis, golf, yachting, and even the picnic, in this concert in the Venetian Theater appropriate for ages 6 and up. There will be a simultaneous program performed in the Spanish Courtyard for children under the age of 6: a special age-appropriate Peter and the Wolf of their own.
Caramoor Al Fresco Al Fresco Sundays offer opportunities for families to enjoy the sounds of selected Venetian Theater concerts from the lawn and picnic areas at Caramoor, ideal for youngsters who may be unlikely to sit still for an entire performance under the big tent. Tickets for these Al Fresco events, all on Sunday afternoons at 4:30pm, are only $10:
- June 28 - Tiempo Libre The top timba (Cuban Salsa) band in the country, two-time Grammy®-nominated Tiempo Libre opens the third year of Sonidos Latinos Latin American music initiative with high voltage Latin Jazz and hard-driving Cuban rhythms.
- July 5 - Pacifica Quartet with Jeremy Denk The 2009 Grammy Award-winning quartet returns to Caramoor and joins one of today's most compelling young pianists in a scintillating program of Mendelssohn, Ligeti, and Dvoøák.
- July 12 - Brentano String Quartet The leading American string quartet of its generation presents an intricately constructed program exploring polyphony and counterpoint through works by Monteverdi, Haydn, and Beethoven.
- July 19 - Paquito D'Rivera and Cuban Jazz: The Next Generation Sonidos Latinos star Paquito D'Rivera, Caramoor's 2007-08 Composer-in-Residence, returns with his all-Cuban band - Mike Rodriquez, trumpet; Manuel Valera, piano; Richard Padron, guitar; Charles Flores, bass; Ernesto Simpson, drums; and Pedro Martinez, percussion - in a sizzling program improvising through the musical styles of native Cuba.
- July 26 - Vladimir Feltsman The Russian pianist is one of the most consummately interesting artists performing today, and he returns to Caramoor to perform three masterpieces: Bach's first published work, Partita No. 1 in B-flat, BWV 825; Beethoven's early success, Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 (Pathétique); and a full dose of Russian virtuosity, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Dancing at Dusk On Wednesday evenings during the summer (pre-Festival on June 3, during the Festival on July 1, and post-Festival on August 5) beginning at 5:00pm, families are invited to come to Caramoor for Dancing at Dusk, evenings of family fun with the kids. Bring a picnic, spread out a blanket, and enjoy great music as children of all ages can dance to live music, interact with musicians, get to know the instruments being played, and ask questions. Dancing at Dusk provides a relaxing and joyous opportunity for young people to discover music. At only $20 per car, Caramoor's Dancing at Dusk is one of the most affordable family opportunities available anywhere.
ABOUT CARAMOOR Caramoor is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen, who built their summer home - now known as the historic Rosen House at Caramoor - and filled it with their treasures. Walter Rosen was the master planner for the Caramoor estate, bringing to reality his dream of creating a place to entertain friends from around the world. Their musical evenings were the seeds of today's Caramoor International Music Festival. Realizing the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor – the house with its art collection, the gardens, and the musical programs on summer evenings - in 1946 the Rosens established a public charity to open Caramoor to the community.
Lucie Rosen survived her husband by seventeen years. During those years, she expanded the Music Festival: the Spanish Courtyard was used as a setting for musical events, as it is today, and, under her direction, the great stage of the Venetian Theater was built.
Caramoor is often described as "a Garden of Great Music" where audiences are invited to come early, explore the beautiful grounds, take a tour of the Rosen House, visit the gift shop, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and discover beautiful music in the relaxed settings of the Venetian Theater, Spanish Courtyard, Music Room of the Rosen House, and the magnificent gardens. With its unique heritage, Caramoor remains a place where magical summer days and nights are shared and enjoyed by thousands. "Caramoor is the loveliest Festival of them all." - The New York Times
Concert Venues, Art and Gardens Concerts take place in two outdoor theaters: the 1714-seat, acoustically superb Venetian Theater and the more intimate, romantic Spanish Courtyard. Caramoor is more than just music - there is beauty at every turn. The Rosen House contains a vast collection of Renaissance, 18th-century, and Eastern art objects, including furniture, tapestries, sculpture, paintings, textiles, porcelain, and jade in twenty rooms that are open to the public. There are entire rooms that were imported from European palaces and villas. In fact, Caramoor is one of just five mansions in the country that incorporate entire rooms from historic Europe into its collection. On Thursdays and Fridays, afternoon tea is served in the Summer Dining Room, overlooking the charming Spanish Courtyard.
Caramoor's gardens are also well worth the visit and include nine unique perennial gardens. Among them are a Sense Circle for the visually handicapped, a Butterfly Garden, Tapestry Hedge, and Sunken Garden, which may be enjoyed on one's own or seen on a guided tour.
Enjoy a Picnic at Caramoor Extend your Caramoor experience by arriving for concerts early and enjoying a picnic amidst the beautiful gardens. Bring your own picnic or pre-order from Great Performances® by calling 212.337.6055.
