Marco Granadas in the Rosen House Music Room
Marco Granados and visiting school children in the Rosen House Music Room

In Carl Sandburg’s poem Skyscraper, men and women pour in and out of an office building all day, endowing the skyscraper with “a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories.” At first glance, the poem, set in urban, early 20th-century Chicago, may seem far removed from Caramoor’s bucolic setting and Renaissance-inspired architecture. Yet for a class of sixth-graders in a Yonkers elementary school, the poem—when paired with a field trip to the Rosen House—creates a connection that helps them see the world in a new way.  Read the full program book article.

Annually since 1986, approximately 5,000 students are provided with arts-in-education opportunities that harness our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting NYS education standards. Programs offered at Caramoor allow students to interact with musicians, play different instruments, meet theater troupes, experience the thrilling sport of falconry, and provide an introduction to the ancient tradition of Chinese brush painting.

Caramoor places an emphasis on reaching out to schools from under-resourced communities in Westchester County and New York City. Students from these schools receive scheduling priority, fee waivers, and transportation underwriting, thanks to the generous support of individuals, foundations, and government agencies.

Young Artist Mentoring
Michael Barrett with students from the Vocal Rising Stars

Evnin Rising Stars ~ eight to ten young instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire.

Vocal Rising Stars ~ based on the successful Rising Stars program, advanced student/beginning professional level singers attend a week-long residency involving intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops outside the realm of opera, focusing on the song recital and vocal chamber music.

Bel Canto Young Artists ~ beginning professional level singers receive coaching in bel canto singing, perform in the chorus of Caramoor's opera productions, and fill various solo performances slots that arise in connection with the International Summer Music Festival.

Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence ~ a residency program for a young chamber ensemble. A different quartet is selected each year to perform in area middle/high schools, provide training to student classical musicians, and perform in several concerts in the International Summer Music Festival and the Winter/Spring Indoors Series programs.

Caramoor Virtuosi ~ a rotating ensemble, most of whom have come up through the Evnin Rising Stars program. Performances throughout the International Summer Music Festival provide welcome opportunities for these young professional musicians at a crucial point in their careers.

Caramoor incurs the costs of our young artist mentoring programs, our arts-in-education programs for students, maintaining the historic Rosen House and its exemplary collection, as well as the 90 acres of beautiful Italianate gardens. Please give a gift to support one of the region’s cultural treasures, and enjoy an enhanced connection to Caramoor and all it has to offer!
