Vocal Rising Stars Mentoring Program

Coach Ricardo Herrera, baritone Carlton Ford, and Artistic Director Steven Blier

Just last March, Caramoor produced the third annual session of Vocal Rising Stars (VRS). Caramoor’s newest mentoring program, designed for young singers at the beginning of their careers, focuses on a specific theme in the non-operatic vocal repertoire. In 2011, Spanish song was the theme, and Spanish works sung in all of Spain’s languages (Catalan, Sephardic, Basque) was the subject. Working with the New York Festival of Song’s Artistic Director, Steven Blier, yours truly lending fingers and ears, and three separate guest coaches, the four young vocalists had a very full schedule.  Read the full program book article

THE TERRANCE W. SCHWAB FUND FOR YOUNG VOCAL ARTISTS
Created in memory of former Caramoor Trustee Terrance W. Schwab by his family, the fund is designed to nurture and support the artistic development and careers of young vocalists at Caramoor. The Terrance W. Schwab Fund allows Caramoor to offer emerging singers career development opportunities, including public performances, coaching, and collaboration with instrumentalists, composers and poets. Artists who benefit from the Schwab Fund are at the start of their careers and in general below the age of 30, but exceptions may be made, based on extraordinary merit.

New contributions to the Terrance W. Schwab Fund for Young Vocal Artists will be matched up to $100,000, through a challenge recently issued by a generous anonymous donor.

Please consider a gift to support this match. To make a contribution to the Terrance W. Schwab Fund for Young Vocal Artists, donate online via our secure server or

About the Vocal Rising Stars

The success of Caramoor's Rising Stars mentoring program has inspired a new initiative known as the Vocal Rising Stars. This initiative, launched as a pilot program in spring 2008, focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. Singers at the beginning professional level are invited to Caramoor for a weeklong residency that offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors. In collaboration with the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), last year's residency culminated in a stupendous performance of The Sweetest Path: The Evolution of French Art Song at Caramoor. From the fathers of French mélodie to its 20th century innovators, The Sweetest Path traced the development of the most poetic, lush, and luminescent vocal traditions.

The identification and development of young musical talent has long been central to Caramoor's mission. This mentoring program, Vocal Rising Stars, has a specialized focus on providing singers with an opportunity to form collaborative partnerships with one another, the Caramoor staff, and the coach/accompanists who also participate in the residency program. At Caramoor, we believe that the work leading up to a performance is of equal if not greater importance than the concert itself and will have a lasting impact on the growth and development of young artists. This year's Vocal Rising Stars program was underwritten through the generosity of the Terrance W. Schwab Fund for Young Vocal Artists.

The Vocal Rising Stars program is supported in part by the Terrance W. Schwab Fund for Young Vocal Artists.
