An informal afternoon concert completes a weekend of American music. Bluegrass, like Jazz, is a unique musical art that only America can claim as truly its own, despite its wide, even global, appeal. Born out of the musical traditions of both white and black populations of Appalachia in the 1930s, its model was crystallized by Bill Monroe, whose bands, featuring the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass, combined with his inimitable "high lonesome" vocals, first thrilled audiences at the Grand Old Opry in 1945. The varied elements of Monroe's inspiration – gospel hymns, minstrelsy, blues – blended with the vital balladry and fiddling traditions of his Celtic forebears to create a distinct genre that swept through the South like a brush fire.
On July 2nd, nimble Irish jigs and reels will blend with the relentless drive of their hoedown descendants for a cross-cultural musical party for the whole family, celebrating the old and the new – Green, Blue – and New Grass too.
Host and dynamic fiddler, Paul Woodiel, and his virtuosic piper partner, Christopher Layer, are joined by father/son powerhouse Jake and Taylor Armerding and pioneering banjo wizard, Greg Liszt.

In 1991, Ravi hooked up with Elvin Jones, his father's renowned drummer from the 60's and received his first taste of the jazz life. Within a year, he relocated to New York City and began playing with a variety of players: Jack DeJohnnette, Rashied Ali, Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, and Joe Lovano. In addition to working and traveling with his own group, Ravi recently has been seen with McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and others. Ravi Coltrane acknowledges the many great musicians who have influenced his music but strives to "make music that is relevant to my everyday experience."
5:00 pm The Joe Henderson Project with Renee Rosnes Joe Henderson's name has become synonymous with power and grace on the tenor saxophone. During his lifetime, Joe Henderson played with nearly every important jazz musician, but it was his landmark recording "The State of the Tenor", recorded live at the Village Vanguard, that finally made Joe Henderson a household name. He recorded notable, award-winning albums celebrating the timeless contributions of legendary composers, while also bringing out new aspects of the veteran saxophonist's own distinct musical language. In addition to worldwide tours with his own bands, Henderson was celebrated by President Clinton at The White House; performed in duo with Carol King for President Clinton's Inaugural Ball; performed as Special Guest with Carlos Santana, Rickie Lee Jones, and the late Antonio Carlos Jobim at Carnegie Hall; and performed as a duo with Melissa Etheridge for the Billboard awards, where he was awarded Billboard magazine's Jazz Artist of the Year. Henderson died in June of 2001.
