We built a home my husband and I, not to be old or new, just to be beautiful. And we built it for music. ~ Lucie Rosen

The historic Rosen House at Caramoor personifies the idealism of its founders, Walter and Lucie Rosen, and the time in which they lived, the first half of the 20th century. Walter Rosen built his Mediterranean-style country home around a central court, the romantic Spanish Courtyard and adorned it with a red tiled roof and picturesque chimneys. As an avid collector he filled the house with a vast collection of fine and decorative arts, including 15 complete period rooms he had imported from European palazzos. The House was completed in 1939 and soon thereafter the Rosen’s started entertaining their diverse group of friends with lavish parties and music soirées. In 1946 the intimate concerts they hosted in the majestic Music Room were open to the public and became the seeds of today’s International Music Festival.
In 1928 when the Rosens decided to purchase an estate near New York City they were invited by one of their friends to see his mother’s estate called Caramoor. Walter and Lucie immediately fell in love with the Italianate gardens, and romantic cedar walks which reminded them of Italy. Soon after, the Rosens were enjoying the 118 acre estate and making it their own. The glorious gardens Walter and Lucie fell in love with still exist today and are enjoyed by the thousands who visit Caramoor and attend our world-famous music performances.
Caramoor incurs the costs of maintaining the historic Rosen House and its exemplary collection, as well as the 90 acres of beautiful Italianate gardens. Please give a gift to support one of the region’s cultural treasures, and enjoy an enhanced connection to Caramoor and all it has to offer! |
