July 14, 2010 It happens like clockwork each year: Just as the cicadas reach the peak of their summer hum, the kids begin their cries of boredom. This year, it’s especially annoying. After all, 90 percent of their waking time has been booked solid, filled with camping, play dates, swimming, chores, sports, arts and crafts, and more. Yet the minute any down time hits, I hear it: “I’m bored. I’m bored. I’m bored.”
And that’s just the kids. As for me, if I have to spend another afternoon supervising the slip-N-slide or negotiating who gets a turn on the computer, I will lose it completely. Clearly we need a change, something new and different to jolt us out of the dog days malaise, yet as family recreation director, I’m running low on ideas.
What ever happened to imagination? Have we scheduled it out of our lives?
Luckily, Caramoor has perfect timing, with itsfamily concert coming up this weekend. For the kids, the concerts include “rhythmic activities,” singing, dancing, and amazing sounds from around the world. Grownups will find the music inspiring too—at least one of the featured instruments, the Swedish nyckelharpa, has piqued my curiosity, and I can’t wait to hear how it’s used. Better yet, the event promises more than its scheduled hour or so of entertainment. After the show we’ll be more likely to approach our world with renewed imaginative vigor, to listen a bit closer and pay more attention to the musical qualities of the cicada hum.
