September 22, 2010 Music is alive and ever changing. The acoustic sound world is vast, and for many musicians provides an ample palate with which to compose; however, the emergence of new technologies in the 1900s inspired many composers to broaden the compositional horizon and incorporate new sounds and effects into their works. The possibilities that arise from the pairing of acoustic sounds with electronic effects are mind-blowing – the simplest acoustic melody can be looped and manipulated on stage to create a blanket of sound over which performers can play. With unlimited possibilities at their fingertips, many musicians have a good reason to be constantly inspired.
Legendary guitarist Bill Frisell has harnessed these tools brilliantly to create a unique brand of jazz that is very much his own. Known for his effortless manipulation of looping effects, Frisell constantly builds an orchestra using a single guitar. First, Frisell will play and simultaneously record a melody, allowing him to later replay the original melody; Frisell can then play over his recording and build layers upon layers of sound, producing an effect of many guitars playing together. I encourage you to check out Bill Frisell this Friday night at 8pm and see what happens when mastery combines with unlimited possibility.
