We are pleased to announce that Karen Oberlin will be joining us on Saturday, April 30, 2011 for Cabaret in the Music Room benefit. The performance will take place in the magnificent Music Room and includes a post-concert champagne and dessert reception with Ms. Oberlin.
As a "soulful, swinging scholar of the Great American Songbook," Karen Oberlin “reaches into the minds and muses of our golden repertoire to teach us, dazzle us, and send us to a Tin Pan Alley nirvana, as deep as the ocean and high as the sky.” That’s according to David Yaffe, music reviewer for The Nation. He and other critics marvel at Ms. Oberlin’s “subdued glamour, pretty voice, poise and interpretive insights.”
Attendees will be treated to her show about Yip Harburg, the legendary lyricist who wrote witty and politically charged songs, as well as the sentimental Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz. In a review of the Harburg show, The New York Times praised Ms. Oberlin’s performance for it’s "musical intelligence . . . purity, naturalness, and polished phrasing, with added colors and a jazzy spontaneity.”
Ms. Oberlin, who played Maureen in the first staged incarnation of the now-legendary Broadway show Rent, appeared in more than 100 Off-Broadway performances of the smash-hit show Our Sinatra, and has performed her own shows nationally and abroad.
