Why does music matter?
I like to think that the difference between us humans and other animals is the arts; individuals have a way of expressing their thoughts—wonderful and terrible things, love and hate, beauty and so on. A life without the arts is not human.

What is it about the setting of a string quartet that you find appealing?
I started playing in a string quartet at age 14, and together Jana and I founded the Kuss Quartet. Our teacher put us together as teenagers (a difficult age!) to learn how to discuss music – how to find solutions and our own way of expressing music in a group. I quickly developed a love for the string quartet. For me, the best way of life is a creative way of life—demanding and inspiring at the same time—in a group with complex and strong individuals.

Any advice for younger musicians?
Be curious and have a long breath... consistency, creativity and the patience to fight for your ideas might make a difference – unfortunately these attributes are not always common in today’s musical world.

What inspires you?
I'm usually most "addicted" to structure—understanding it, bringing it alive and making it audible. Nothing to do with being cold - it can be so touching. But without an interesting structure a piece of art is probably not finding my attention for very long.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
I - don't - know ... ask my colleagues, they know me better!
