Dancing at Dusk

Hammerstep

Overview

Dancing at Dusk is a Caramoor summer tradition, enjoyed by families and those who simply like to experience joyful sounds. Held on the spacious lawn of Friends Field, D@D offers you a chance to learn about and dance to music from around the globe.

After their performance on America’s Got Talent, the New York-based Hammerstep was told “your skill level is so high you’re impossible to ignore.” Founded by two-time solo World Champion Irish dancer Garrett Coleman and former lead of Riverdance Jason Oremus, Hammerstep is forever changing the face of dance. Hammerstep’s raw and percussion-driven approach draws from various historically rebellious dance forms, including Irish, tap, hip hop, African stepping, and more.

D@D features free arts and crafts activities, plenty of space for kids to run around, spacious picnic lawns, free and convenient parking, and real restrooms (with baby changing areas).

Dancing at Dusk is a family event designed to invite as many participants as possible. The field and activity stations open at 4:30 pm.  Our live set will begin anywhere between 5:15 pm and 5:25 pm depending on attendance. Until the start of the live show, music will be provided for guests to start dancing.  We welcome you to join the pre-show festivities!

The Hammerstep Initiative, founded by two-time solo World Champion Irish dancer Garrett Coleman and former lead of Riverdance Jason Oremus, is forever changing the face of dance. Formed in 2009, the Brooklyn, NY based group is an organized arsenal of stage performance, public ambush dance & guerrilla street marketing, community organizing & action, outreach initiatives, and alternative media coverage.

Hammerstep’s raw and percussion-driven approach to artistic expression draws from various historically rebellious dance forms, including Irish, tap, hip hop, African stepping, and more. The result is a mind-bending audiovisual assault delivered through an explosive soundscape, groundbreaking use of technology, and thought-provoking themes.

Coleman and Oremus are breaking new ground through their innovative choreography and by employing a range of audiovisual responsive technologies. Their revolutionary approach to dance is set to fresh original music by some of the world’s best musicians, including all-Ireland fiddle champion Patrick Mangan, DJ GoldenChild, and Grammy-nominated musician/composer Dave Eggar.

Hammerstep has performed worldwide, from New York City’s famed Lincoln Center to the UK’s Palace Theatre, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012.In June 2013, Hammerstep performed for an international television audience on NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

Past performances have been met with great acclaim and have set the stage for more extensive North American and international tours. To find out more, visit www.hammerstep.com.
