The final concert celebrating Bel Canto at Caramoor features a choral gem from one of opera’s greatest composers. Rossini surprised the musical world by retiring from the theater when he was only 32 years of age; he surprised it again by emerging at more than twice that age to compose “the last mortal Sin of my Old Age,” his Petite messe solennelle (1864). Alternately jubilant and haunted, antique and modern, the mass contains some of the composer’s most beautiful and expressive music. Caramoor presents the piece in its original chamber instrumentation for two pianos and harmonium.

“Dear God, here it is finished, this poor little Mass. Little skill, but a bit of heart – there you have it. Be blessed, then, and grant me Heaven!” — Gioachino Rossini, from title page of the manuscript

Winner of the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions, 26-year-old Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has astounded audiences around the world. Now Caramoor audiences have a chance to experience this “brilliant, uncommonly poetic soloist” (The New York Times). Trifonov’s 2016 album of Liszt etudes, Transcendental, ended up on numerous year-end lists and his sold-out Carnegie Hall recital last December was streamed to a worldwide audience on Facebook and medici.tv. Martha Argerich proclaimed Trifonov’s playing has “everything and more.” With “monstrous technique and lustrous tone” (The New Yorker), Trifonov tackles a challenging program, including Schumann’s Kinderszenen (“Scenes from Childhood”) and the composer’s “favorite work,” Kreisleriana, as well as works from two Russian giants—Stravinsky and Shostakovich.

Manuel García, Rossini’s opening night tenor in Il barbiere di Siviglia, was also a prolific composer and singing teacher. In 1830-31 he wrote a series of brilliant one-act “operettas” with piano accompaniment, to be performed by his students. Un avvertimento ai gelosi (“Advice to the Jealous”)–performed here as edited by Teresa Radomski–showcases the bel canto virtuosity and expressive flair that were García’s hallmarks as a performer and instructor.

Two titans of the Romantic repertoire close out our 2017 summer season. Liszt’s tone poem Les préludes opens the program followed by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s characteristic “fiery account” (The Washington Post) of the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony tells the story of his personal triumph over adversity. Set in the bright key of C Major, this uplifting symphony brings the Caramoor summer season to a properly sunny close.

“There are long, long, long melodies such as no-one had ever made before,” wrote Giuseppe Verdi of Bellini’s unique gift. Wagner was moved to the same incantatory repetition: “Song, song, and once again song, ye Germans,” he urged in an essay praising the hypnotic Italian master.  Bellini poured his melody also into the intimate vessel of piano-accompanied songs – sometimes developing ideas that later found their way into his operas. The Bel Canto Young Artists join Director of Opera Will Crutchfield in this tribute to the father of modern melody.
