Katonah, NY – Singer/songwriter, Aoife O’Donovan returns to Caramoor on Saturday, April 12 to perform a special solo acoustic performance of her debut solo album, Fossils. The performance, set to begin at 8 p.m. in the Music Room, promises to include “a must-listen blend of bluegrass, folk and back-porch Americana” (Rolling Stone Magazine) by "a vocalist of unerring instinct" (New York Times). Aoife is widely known as the lead singer of alt-bluegrass/string band Crooked Still, a member of the folk noir trio Sometymes Why, and as the vocalist on the GRAMMY winning album The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. ABOUT THE ARTIST Former Crooked Still frontwoman Aoife O'Donovan (pronounced EEF-uh) was born in Newton, Massachusetts, in November of 1982. She grew up spending summers in Ireland, where she studied traditional Irish folk music and folk dancing. After high school, she enrolled at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Mass. There, she started collaborating with fellow Conservatorians, particularly Corey DiMario. In the summer of 2001, O'Donovan and DiMario teamed up with Rushad Eggleston and Greg Liszt - students at Berklee College of Music and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), respectively, and the newly formed troupe took on the name of Crooked Still. It wasn't long before Crooked Still started making waves on the local music scene, earning a reputation as a genre-defying string band. As their name became known outside of Boston and the Northeast, Crooked Still became a darling of the burgeoning bluegrass community, emerging alongside other young contemporary stringbands like Nickel Creek, Uncle Earl, and others who were challenging the boundaries of the traditional form. In fact, she teamed up with Kristin Andreassen of Uncle Earle and Ruth Unger of the Mammals for a somewhat all-star band of singer-songwriters called Sometymes Why. That trio released their debut in 2005, followed by another in 2009. Though O'Donovan became most widely known as the frontwoman for Crooked Still, in addition to her collaborations with Andreassen and Ungar, she was playing in a band called the Wayfaring Strangers and collaborating with other songwriters. Indeed, it's O'Donovan's songwriting which has become more of a focal point in recent years. Especially after capturing the interest and attention of Alison Krauss, who recorded O'Donovan's "Lay My Burden Down" for her 2011 Rounder Records release Paper Airplane (with Union Station). Her debut solo album, Fossils, was released in June 2013.
