Roots Music in the Music Room continues as we bring you a double bill featuring Aoife O’Donovan and The Stray Birds.

Aoife O’Donovan, widely known as the lead singer of alt-bluegrass/string band Crooked Still, as a member of the folk noir trio Sometymes Why, and as the vocalist on the GRAMMY winning album The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan, joins us for a special solo acoustic performance. The stunning versatility and appeal of her voice brought her to the attention of some of the most eminent names across roots, classical, bluegrass, and jazz and led to collaborations across a wide variety of genres with everyone from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas. Aoife returns to Caramoor for the third time, having appeared here with Crooked Still and with Ollabelle.

The Stray Birds,  a fast rising string band hailing from Lancaster County, and named one of the 2013 folk bands to watch by Kim Ruehl and Linda Fahey, NPR Music, opens the show.  The Stray Birds return to Caramoor for the second time, having performed in the American Roots Music Festival in 2013.

The performance takes place in the Music Room of the historic Rosen House, an exquisite setting for acoustic roots music.

The Board of Trustees of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts cordially invites you to a Benefit Event in its 20th year, presenting Rebecca Luker.

“Ms. Luker and Kern, the arch melodist of the classic American songbook, are a celestial match, for Ms. Luker has a sound that is as pure and perfect in its way as the melody for “All the Things You Are.” There wasn’t a false note, technically or emotionally, in an evening in which Ms. Luker’s singing embodied a paradoxical combination of the ethereal and the down-to-earth.”  –Stephen Holden, New York Times

“Rebecca Luker’s infectiously joyful “I Can’t Help Singing” immediately makes us grateful this is the case. Luker has one of the most sumptuous and texturally affecting voices in the business. Its sweep, clarity, and control is shiver inducing. None of this would be true, of course, without the artist’s expressive intelligence and innate warmth.” –Alix Cohen, Woman Around Town

“Everyone left happy, for Luker is a spellbinding soprano, effortlessly charming and unfailingly sweet of sound.” –Nelson Pressley, Washington Post

Everyone is invited to a champagne and dessert reception with Ms. Luker after the performance.

Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse was still too controversial for the censors when Verdi took it up in 1850; the King of France had to become the Duke of Mantua – but this does nothing to weaken the heartrending tale of “physical deformity redeemed by paternal love” (Hugo). Verdi drew on everything he had learned from Donizetti, including the radical finale that dwindles down to the doomed parent and child alone on stage, and created bel canto melodies that became immortal.
