CARAMOOR LAUNCHES ITS FIRST-EVER FALL FESTIVAL

FEATURING JAZZ GREAT
CHICK COREA
IN A RARE SOLO CONCERT

OCTOBER 3, 2009 8:00 PM
IN THE VENETIAN THEATER

Katonah, New York - Michael Barrett, General Director of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, is pleased to present Grammy Award-winning jazz giant Chick Corea as a featured artist in Caramoor's first-ever Fall Festival, which runs October 2 - 4, 2009.  Mr. Corea will be making his Caramoor debut in this rare solo concert on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 8:00pm in the Venetian Theater.

Considering the staggering volume of his recorded output over the past 40 years, it is no overstatement to call Chick Corea one of the most prolific composers and performers of the second half of the 20th century. From avant-garde to bebop, from children's songs to straight-ahead, from hard-hitting fusion to heady forays into classical, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is simply uncanny.  Throughout the years, he's seen immense success with his numerous jazz collaborations, from 'Return to Forever' to the 'Chick Corea Elektric Band' - and most recently, the 'Five Peace Band' - therefore making solo acoustic concerts an extraordinary occasion for the artist.

About the Artist
Anthony Armando "Chick" Corea was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1941.  At age four he was taught piano at home, and began playing the drums when he was eight years old. The adolescent pianist was already performing at local weddings, bar mitzvahs, and area functions before his graduation from high school.  Accepted by The Juilliard School as a piano major, he remained at the conservatory only two months before realizing that a conventional education was not for him.  During the sixties he joined the Mongo Santamaria ensemble and the Willie Bobo combo, and worked as a sideman for Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann, and Stan Getz.  In 1968, Chick Corea was working as an accompanist for Sarah Vaughan when he received a call from the legendary Herbie Hancock. Hancock was on his honeymoon and needed Corea to replace him for a Baltimore date with jazz's hottest star, Miles Davis.  The winner of numerous "best keyboardist" polls, multiple Grammy Awards, and an array of other honors, Mr. Corea's popularity soared as a solo artist; but he also collaborated with various musicians from jazz, crossover, and classical fields, including Michael Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Eddie Gomez, Miroslav Vitous, violinist Ida Kavafian, and cellist Fred Sherry.  A workaholic who tours in a bus that once belonged to country star Merle Haggard, Chick Corea continues to perform and compose throughout each year entertaining dedicated fans and new audiences the world over.

About Caramoor
Caramoor is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen, who built their summer home - now known as the historic Rosen House at Caramoor - and filled it with their treasures.  Walter Rosen was the master planner for the Caramoor estate, bringing to reality his dream of creating a place to entertain friends from around the world.  Their musical evenings were the seeds of today's Caramoor International Music Festival.  Realizing the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor - the house with its art collection, the gardens, and the musical programs on summer evenings - the Rosens established a public charity in 1946 to open Caramoor to the community.

Lucie Rosen survived her husband by seventeen years.  During those years, she expanded the Music Festival: the Spanish Courtyard was used as a setting for musical events, as it is today, and, under her direction, the great stage of the Venetian Theater was built.

Caramoor is a Garden of Great Music where audiences are invited to come early, explore the beautiful grounds, take a tour of the Rosen House, visit the gift shop, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and discover beautiful music in the relaxed settings of the Venetian Theater, Spanish Courtyard, Music Room of the Rosen House, and the magnificent gardens.  With its unique heritage, Caramoor remains a place where magical summer days and nights are shared and enjoyed by thousands. "Caramoor is the loveliest Festival of them all." - The New York Times

Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is located at 149 Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah, New York.
