Katonah, New York - On Saturday, April 10, 2010, the Great Artists in the Music Room series continues at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts with The St. Lawrence String Quartet at 8:00 PM. Keeping with the theme of this season's series, "Turns of the Centuries", the St. Lawrence String Quartet performs a program steeped in tradition yet seeking the new, with three hugely influential works in the quartet literature: Haydn's last complete string quartet, Ravel's stunning and widely performed work from 1903, and a quartet by John Adams, one of today's most celebrated composers, written especially for the St. Lawrence String Quartet in 2008.

Great Artists in the Music Room: Turns of the Centuries
Where we find significant social, political and cultural shifts throughout history, we also find important music. Turns of the Centuries presents music of transitional importance, written at the turns of the 18th into the 19th, the 19th into the 20th, and the 20th into the 21st centuries, performed by some of today's most extraordinary artists. Each program explores influential music written at the time of seminal historical shifts, whether it be the movement away from the Classical style towards Romanticism of the late Haydn and middle period Beethoven, or the development of new musical languages in response to the loosening of tonality during the first decade of the 20th Century, or the entirely new world of our contemporary musical culture(s). Turns of the Centuries is curated by Christopher Zimmerman, Artistic Administrator for the Caramoor Center.

St. Lawrence String Quartet
Celebrating its 20th anniversary last season, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has established itself among the world-class chamber ensembles of its generation. The quartet's mission is to bring every piece of music to the audience in vivid color, with pronounced communication and teamwork, and great respect to the composer.  Since winning both the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992, the quartet has delighted audiences with its spontaneous, passionate and dynamic performances. Alex Ross of The New Yorker magazine writes, "the St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they take in the act of connection."

In concert, the foursome regularly delivers traditional quartet repertoire but is also fervently committed to performing and expanding the works of living composers.  The St. Lawrence has active working relationships with numerous composers, including John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, R. Murray Schafer, Christos Hatzis, Jonathan Berger, Ka Nin Chan, Roberto Sierra and Mark Applebaum.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet has been involved in numerous inventive collaborations, including projects with the renowned Pilobolus Dance Theatre and the Emerson Quartet.  In 2007 they joined with soprano Heidi Grant Murphy and pianist Kevin Murphy to premiere Roberto Sierra's "Songs from the Diaspora" - a commission through the Music Accord consortium.  They have also performed R. Murray Shafer's Concerto for Quartet and Orchestra "4-40" with Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony, Emmanuel Villaume and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and Yuli Turovsky with I Musici de Montreal.

Early in their career, the St. Lawrence String Quartet was privileged to study with the Emerson, Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets and have for many years been passionate educators.  Since 1998 they have held the position of Ensemble in Residence at Stanford University.
