Beethoven's ten sonatas for violin and piano redefined the art of duo music-making.  In Part 1 of the complete sonatas, five different duos—some of the most creative, insightful, and dramatic interpreters today—tackle five of these masterworks and demonstrate why Beethoven remains, to this day, a source of inspiration for musicians and audiences alike.

The Brentano String Quartet’s unsurpassable creativity and rigor has made them to top American quartet performing today.  To help celebrate their 20th anniversary as a quartet, Caramoor co-commissioned ‘Fragments:  Connecting Past and Present’.  The Brentanos invited six living composers to write pieces related to fragmentary works by past masters—a formidable project opening the present onto the past.

Closing out its Caramoor Residency, the riveting Linden String Quartet delves into an exploration of the mutual influences of music and literature.  The Lindens team up with singer-songwriter and polymath Gabriel Kahane for world and East Coast premieres in a program set in relief by Corigliano’s intriguing approach and anchored by Beethoven’s late masterpiece.

Digging into a wildly eclectic repertoire with a gripping performance style, the genre-defying string quartet Brooklyn Rider has been garnering popular and critical acclaim across the musical spectrum—from classical, to world music, to rock.  NPR credits Brooklyn Rider with "recreating the 300-year-old form of the string quartet as a vital and creative 21st-century ensemble."   A Caramoor debut not to be missed.

Since its Caramoor residency, the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet has taken the chamber music world by storm.  Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberance, and daring, the Pacificas team up with Anthony McGill (Principle Clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra) for Mozart’s lyrical Clarinet Quintet leading into Smetana’s and Janacek’s autobiographical gems.
