Head of Kuan-yin* |
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY: POPULAR FEMALE DEITIES IN CHINESE ART Through October 18th, 2009 Tickets: Included with Rosen House admission of $10.00
Guest curator: Adriana Proser, John H. Foster Curator of Traditional Asian Art, Asia Society Museum
Female deities play major roles in Buddhism and Taoism, two popular traditions of belief in Asia. Surprisingly, in several Asian countries the most common Buddhist imagery is not of the Buddha but of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. In China, this Bodhisattva of Compassion is known as Kuan-yin. From approximately the 11th century AD, Kuan-yin is frequently depicted in China in a female guise. Those suffering and in need appeal to this beloved intercessor for assistance. Female figures are also an important part of the religious pantheon of Taoism. The Queen Mother of the West (Hsi-wang-mu) presides over a land of immortality located on Mount K'un-lun, and female immortals, such as Ho Hsien-ku, roam through other realms of immortality. The exhibition includes gilt bronze, ivory, porcelain, wooden, and stone sculptures, including sumptuous jade and lapis lazuli carvings, from the amazing Rosen collection.
