"Stepping Stones to Music" programs suitable for ages 3 to 12
Katonah, New York - Three Family Music Programs are set for this autumn at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, New York. Part of Caramoor's Stepping Stones to Music: Growing Up With Great Music initiative, these family-friendly performances are recommended for ages 3 to 12.
Stepping Stones to Music fosters a life-long appreciation for good music by offering age-appropriate programs for children, from the very young to young adults. These programs, now in their fifth full season, take place in the Activity Room of the Diane Moss Education Center, a colorful, lively, informal space in one of Caramoor's original Mediterranean-style buildings.
African Brazilian Carnival invites families to join a group of vivacious performers who demonstrate an exciting selection of African and Brazilian dances, songs and music. The appearance of Gnalon - a stiltwalker from the Ivory Coast - will bring good luck to audiences and sets the mood for dances such as the capoeira, a dance developed by Africans brought to Brazil as slaves more than 400 years ago and incorporating the speed and agility of martial arts, dancing and acrobatics.
Performances of African Brazilian Carnival will be Saturday, October 29 at 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.
John Kirk and Trish Miller will lead youngsters in dance and music traditions from early American life in Quickstep. A married couple from the foothills of the Adirondacks, they travel the country year-round fiddlin', clog dancing, and singing folk songs, immigration ballads and educating and inspiring youngsters in toe-tapping programs.
Performances of Quickstep will be Saturday, November 12 at 11:30 am and 1:00 pm
The perfect holiday program for families comes to Caramoor when The Nutcracker - not the ballet, but the original story of E.T.A. Hoffman - is presented. Working from a full orchestral score of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, this musical tale is performed by a woodwind quintet and dramatized especially for young people by a dynamic storyteller from a script based on the 19th century German tale.
The Nutcracker will be presented on Saturday, December 10 at 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.

In addition to the Fall 2005 Family Music Programs, three programs are scheduled for Spring 2006. The Jupiter String Quartet, Caramoor's Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, will offer family concerts on Saturday, April 8; Klezmer for Kids will have youngsters singing, clapping and dancing on Saturday, April 22; and Andes Manta, a program of music of the Andes mountains, will be presented on Saturday, May 6.
Tickets for all Family Music Programs are $15. In addition to single tickets, discounted "Trio" subscriptions are available at $36 for any three Family Music Program performances.

Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen, who built the great house and filled it with their treasures. Walter Rosen was the master planner for the Caramoor estate, bringing to reality his dream of creating a place to entertain friends from around the world. Their musical evenings were the seeds of the International Music Festival of today. Realizing the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor - the house with its art collection; the gardens; and the musical programs on summer evenings - the Rosens established a Foundation to open Caramoor to the public in perpetuity.
