A Rainbow of Rhythm from Latin America
The sweeping rhythms and tumultuous tunes that characterize Sonidos Latinos, or Latin Sounds, are as multi-faceted as the diverse countries they represent. From Argentina to Cuba, from Brazil to Mexico and all the way to New York, the tuneful mixture known as Latin American music enlivens Caramoor this spring and summer as our Sonidos Latinos series enters its second year.
"When we think of Argentinean music, we think of the Tango; Brazil gets the Samba; and Cuba dances to the Rhumba, Mambo, Danzón and Salsa," notes Michael Barrett, Caramoor's Chief Executive and General Director. "As last year's inaugural Sonidos Latinos series demonstrated, all these genres contribute to a rich musical mélange of sounds and textures as the various styles mix and mutate."
Paquito D'Rivera, Caramoor's 2007-2008 Composer-in-Residence, sees it as a "rainbow of music." Recorded at Caramoor's 2007 International Music Festival and broadcast on WNYC in 2008, Mr. D'Rivera chatted with Mr. Barrett and other musicians, including Venezuelan flutist Marco Granados, Sonidos Latinos 2007-2008 artistic advisor.
