FALL 2008 TEACHER WORKSHOPS
NOVEMBER 7 RENAISSANCE ART AND MUSIC: Inspiration from the Greeks to the Alchemists with John LaBarbera

John, a truly inspired artist and teacher, will start the day playing a selection of renaissance works and instruments. Participants will: • Dance the Tarantella (or sit it out), • View manuscripts and illustrations, • Examine “lost” instruments, and • Create percussion and/or vocal improvisations around ancient poetry and the oldest Western melody!

John T. La Barbera is a composer, concert guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. He is a recipient of the Italian Oral History Institute Award for his extraordinary role in the transmission and translation of Italian oral traditions in America; composer awards from ASCAP and commissions from the Jerome Foundation, The Martin Gruss Foundation, Lincoln Center; and funding from the New York State Council on the Arts. His music has enhanced numerous films, theatrical productions and concert performances for over two decades and has been sought after by many directors seeking to create authentic Italian soundtracks. He is the author of Traditional Southern Italian Mandolin and Fiddle Tunes for mandolin, soon to be published by Mel Bay Publications and wrote for Acoustic Guitar Magazine: (Letter from Sao Paulo), October 1998, no.70.
He holds a B.M. from the Hartt School of Music, (U. of Hartford) and further education at Hunter College in NYC in Ethnomusicology, Villa Schifanoia (Rosary College) in Florence and at the Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy.
These arts-in-education programs, held in the fall and early spring, are open to all teachers and administrators. They are designed with insightful and innovative teaching techniques to be personally enriching as well as supportive and inspirational for classroom instruction.

THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE:
- An optional Rosen House tour
- Continental breakfast and buffet lunch
- Morning presentation / discussion - often with afternoon interactive break-out sessions
- Workshop materials
BEFORE THE PROGRAM: Funding is available for qualifying schools through BOCES.
AFTER THE PROGRAM: A letter of attendance, with number of hours, is provided if needed by the school or district.
