June 2, 2010 Perspective is everything. As a musician I play with time, establishing a framework of duration and then bending the metric pulse to suit my mood. My father, a photographer, jousts with the light and will do anything to capture a sunrise. Although our mediums are different, my father and I have always found common ground on the subject of art, and much of my childhood was spent discussing the relationship between our mediums. We have found truth both through a lens and a saxophone and have celebrated each other’s revelations with great exuberance. Under the wing of my father’s wisdom I learned that virtuosity would not create a masterpiece; instead it is one’s vision that makes great art. As said, perspective is everything.
As a child, The Museum of Modern Art was my playground, my dad was my curator, and Jackson Pollock was my god. The avant-garde always struck my fancy, and as a teenager I fell in love with jazz. Now a graduate from the Manhattan School of Music, I am back at home and there isn’t enough space for all of my dreams. The future is my canvas and like always, my father is my mentor.
Although living at home can be frustrating, it is exciting to look at the work my father has done in the past few years. His most recent collection entitled American (Continued) will open at the Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield on June 27th. The show will explore the issue of immigration in a reportage style. Each photograph is brilliant and the collection as a whole is a masterpiece—the perspective, here, is from a man who has reinvented himself more than once and whose ingenuity has stood the test of time. I couldn’t be more proud of my father, and I am honored to announce this show. Come join me for the show’s opening on June 27th at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and then tell me what you thought by posting a comment in response to my blog!
