July 27, 2010 According to Dr. John, who’s performing at Caramoor on July 31, the key to New Orleans music is “playing with the music, as much as playing the music.” In a 2004 interview on NPR, he talks about combining Caribbean rhythms, African music, Irish folk songs, and more to create his distinct New Orleans sound. He’s had a long career, ranging from ‘70s hits (Iko Iko, Right Place at the Wrong Time) to a recent album (The City That Care Forgot, a tribute to post-Katrina New Orleans).
My kids may not be able to attend his Saturday concert, but that’s okay (I’ll enjoy it more without them!). On Sunday I’ll play them some classic Dr. John oldies, along with a more recent song they already know: Down in New Orleans, his contribution to last year’s Disney flick The Princess and the Frog. I’ll also rent some Muppet movies—apparently Dr. John was the inspiration for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
