Picnicking Allowed
May 18, 2010
I recently had a chance to talk with Marianne C. Lockwood, president of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Last summer marked the group’s 30th consecutive year as orchestra-in-residence at Caramoor, and Marianne has been with the group from the start, so she had many interesting stories to tell.

I was surprised to learn that picnicking at Caramoor wasn’t always allowed. According to Marianne, Caramoor’s administrators looked at her “a little bit askance” when she suggested the idea. “In the very early days, you could not walk on the grass, let alone picnic! It wasn’t the thing to do, but they allowed me—they were very gracious about it—and I used it as an opportunity to introduce people to Caramoor,” Marianne recalled.

“There was a woman back then who was very protective of Caramoor,” Marianne continued. “She couldn’t bear the idea that the estate was open to the public, so when people inquired about tickets, she would just automatically tell everyone that the concert was sold out.”

Now, of course, the opposite is true. Pre-concert picnics are encouraged, and for visitors too busy to bring their own food, Caramoor even offers a menu catered by Great Performances.
