Tried and True vs. The New
June 8, 2010
Before I had kids, seeking out new music was effortless. But now, with the calculus of time and money complicated by kids, it's become troublesome. A night out involves advance planning, complicated scheduling, and-most daunting-additional money to cover the babysitter. As a result, new music has been losing out to the tried and true. Now that I have kids, I only go out when my favorite bands come by.

But next month, when Caramoor presents its first "New Shoots Bluegrass Festival," I'll have an easy opportunity to sample some new music as the Punch Brothers, Crooked Still, and Sandra Wong visit for a daylong celebration of traditional American music. In a sense, the Punch Brothers are "tried and true," as well as "new," so I won’t be disappointed. The band, which has toured all over, including a stop at Carnegie Hall last fall, has an incredible pedigree, with former Nickel Creek member Chris Thile on mandolin. The three bands promise a new twist on traditional music, and a welcome expansion of my new music pursuits.
