June 22, 2010 With school ending this week, my calendar is suddenly appealingly blank. No more after-school activities—just lots of white space stretching out week after week—pure freedom. The only commitments listed for the next couple of months are scattered on the weekends, with a few Wednesday afternoon events to break up any boredom.
Now that summer’s here, the days get longer and the events get better! So long cub scouts; I’m off to see Mitsuko Uchida (June 26)! Bye-bye brownies; Hello Paquito D’Rivera (June 27)! Instead of rushing off to meet the school bus next Wednesday, I’ll spend my afternoon packing a picnic for an evening of “English Country Dancing” (June 30).
And that’s just week one! Caramoor’s festival line-up continues, with enough events to keep me—and everyone else in the family, including the elementary-school kids—happy. When school ends on Thursday, June 24, I’ll celebrate by pouring a glass of wine and tuning to WQXR at 7:00 p.m. for a live broadcast and video webcast featuring Terrance McKnight and Caramoor’s General Director Michael Barrett, who will introduce some of the season’s stars. To me, this radio preview is the perfect way to start summer.
