Caramoor's First Fall Festival Continues With

Sumi Jo in Recital
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2009   4:00PM

Katonah, NY -  The renowned soprano Sumi Jo will appear as a featured artist in Caramoor's first-ever Fall Festival, which runs October 2 - 4, 2009.  Ms. Jo will perform a rare concert recital in the Music Room on Sunday, October 4 at 4:00pm. Will Crutchfield, Caramoor's Director of Opera, will reveal another, more personal side of Sumi Jo. Mr. Crutchfield, who has worked with Ms. Jo in a variety of different contexts over the past decade, including twice at the Caramoor International Music Festival, will accompany her.

"A lot of people don't realize that Sumi is an extremely good pianist with an affinity for chamber music," Mr. Crutchfield explains, noting that song recitals are really a form of chamber music. "This will be our first performance together without orchestra, and Caramoor's public will get a chance to hear the intimate side of Sumi's singing that her colleagues know and love from rehearsals with her."

Mr. Crutchfield led the Orchestra of St. Luke's in Sumi Jo's previous, critically-acclaimed and sold-out performances at the Caramoor International Music Festival as part of the Bel Canto at Caramoor series.  She made her Caramoor debut in 2005 singing the leading role of Amina in Bellini's La Sonnambula and returned the following summer to sing Bellini again, as Elvira in I Puritani opposite Ewa Podles.

Tickets
Tickets for Sumi Jo in Recital are $90.00 and $125.00 and may be purchased online at www.caramoor.org or by calling the Box Office at 914.252.1252.  Special arrangements may be made for groups of 16 or more.  Contact Matt Scarella at 914.232.5035 ext. 266.

SUMI JO
Born in Korea, Sumi Jo studied in her native country before enrolling in the Conservatory of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Her recital debut in Seoul was followed by concerts with the Korean Broadcasting Company Orchestra. Her first operatic role was Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, which she also sang in Seoul. While studying in Italy, Miss Jo was frequently heard in concert in Italian cities and also in radio broadcasts and telecasts on the RAI Italian National Network. She graduated with honors from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in October 1986.

This past season Ms. Jo was Marie in La Fille du Regiment in Santiago, Chile, and Elvira in I Puritani in concert with the Monnaie in Brussels and in Amsterdam. New additions to her repertoire in recent years have been Delibes' Lakeme, Meyerbeer's Dinorah and Giulietta in I Capuleti ed i Montecchi, which she sang for the Minnesota Opera. In 2007-08 she made her role debut as Violetta in La traviata in Toulon. Her 2008 season includes Bellini's I puritani in Bergamo, Fra Diavolo at the Opéra Comique and Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liege, a gala concert with Jonas Kaufmann, Renee Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky as part of the Olympic games in Beijng, a Christmas concert with Jose Carreras in Barcelona as well as solo concerts in Canada, United States, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Paris, Brussels, Barcelona, recital tours in Korea, Tokyo and Australia and duo concerts with Dmitri Hvorostovky in Asia, United States and Canada.

Sumi Jo is also in constant demand as a concert artist, both for special events such as the World Cup, an Asian tour of gala concerts with Andrea Bocelli, and a program of Viennese favorites with celebrated Cincinnati Pops. She has been heard in recital in major festivals and concert halls worldwide. In 2001 at Carnegie Hall, accompanied by The Orchestra of St. Luke's, she gave her first public performances of Broadway Songs on her crossover album Only Love, which sold more than 1,200,000 copies worldwide, adding to her list of best-selling recordings.

ABOUT CARAMOOR
Caramoor is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen, who built their summer home - now known as the historic Rosen House at Caramoor - and filled it with their treasures.  Walter Rosen was the master planner for the Caramoor estate, bringing to reality his dream of creating a place to entertain friends from around the world.  Their musical evenings were the seeds of today's Caramoor International Music Festival.  Realizing the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor - the house with its art collection, the gardens, and the musical programs on summer evenings - in 1946 the Rosens established a public charity to open Caramoor to the community.

Lucie Rosen survived her husband by seventeen years.  During those years, she expanded the Music Festival: the Spanish Courtyard was used as a setting for musical events, as it is today, and, under her direction, the great stage of the Venetian Theater was built.

Caramoor is a Garden of Great Music where audiences are invited to come early, explore the beautiful grounds, take a tour of the Rosen House, visit the gift shop, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and discover beautiful music in the relaxed settings of the Venetian Theater, Spanish Courtyard, Music Room of the Rosen House, and the magnificent gardens.  With its unique heritage, Caramoor remains a place where magical summer days and nights are shared and enjoyed by thousands. "Caramoor is the loveliest Festival of them all." - The New York Times
