Katonah, New York - On Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 4:00 PM, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts presents the first installment of this spring's Great Artists in the Music Room Series. Turns of the Centuries: Piano Panoply presents a vast array of works for solo piano, written at the turns of the last three centuries, that represent dramatic and influential shifts from Classicism to Romanticism and from the last days of tonality to the new musical languages of the first decade of the 20th century, as well as works written in the last ten years that suggest the creative impulses and possibilities of contemporary composition. Included in this panoply of works, contemporary music specialist Sarah Cahill will give the world premiere performance of Annie Gosfield's newest work for piano solo. At the forefront of their generation, these five pianists - Sarah Cahill, Joel Fan, Benjamin Hochman, Ieva Jokubaviciute and Andrius Zlabys - bring the music to life with powerfully original and highly sensitive and nuanced interpretations of this stunning diversity of repertoire.
Great Artists in the Music Room: Turns of the Centuries
Where we find significant social, political and cultural shifts throughout history, we also find important music. Turns of the Centuries presents music of transitional importance, written at the turns of the 18th into the 19th, the 19th into the 20th, and the 20th into the 21st centuries, performed by some of today's most extraordinary artists. Each program explores influential music written at the time of seminal historical shifts, whether it be the movement away from the Classical style towards Romanticism of the late Haydn and middle period Beethoven, or the development of new musical languages in response to the loosening of tonality during the first decade of the 20th Century, or the entirely new world of our contemporary musical culture(s). Turns of the Centuries is curated by Christopher Zimmerman, Artistic Administrator for the Caramoor Center.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Sarah Cahill was recently praised in the Village Voice for "her phenomenal technique, her instinctive command of recent aesthetics, and quite possibly the most interesting repertoire of any pianist around." She specializes in new American music, as well as the American experimental tradition, and has commissioned, premiered and recorded numerous compositions for solo piano. Ms. Cahill is particularly fascinated by how the early 20th-century American modernists have influenced composers working today. She has explored these musical lineages in numerous concert programs, the most ambitious being a three-day festival celebrating the centennial of Henry Cowell in 1997. She has performed at the Miller Theatre and Cooper Union in New York, the Other Minds Festival, Pacific Crossings Festival in Tokyo, at the Spoleto Festival USA, and at the Nuovi Spazi Musicali festival in Rome.
Joel Fan began his performing career with the New York Philharmonic at age 11, as a winner of the Philharmonic's Young People's Concert Auditions, and has since appeared in recital and with orchestras throughout the world. Mr. Fan's eclectic repertoire spans traditional piano classics and concertos, his own piano transcriptions and cadenzas, and newly commissioned works. Mr. Fan has performed to critical acclaim with orchestras in the United States and abroad and has collaborated with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, David Zinman, David Alan Miller, Larry Rachleff, Gustav Meier, David Robertson and Alan Gilbert. His debut solo recording World Keys was released in June 2006 on the Reference Recordings label. Mr. Fan is a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and has appeared in numerous performances with the Ensemble at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as on the television shows Good Morning America and The Late Show with David Letterman.
Benjamin Hochman has achieved widespread acclaim for his performances as orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician on some of the world's greatest concert stages and festivals. After his successful recital debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he became a presence in New York through concerts with the New York Philharmonic and the American Symphony Orchestra, his Carnegie Hall debut with the Israel Philharmonic, and appearances at the 92nd Street Y. In the 2009-2010, season Benjamin Hochman released his first album on Artek, featuring Bach's Partita No. 4 in D and Partita No. 6 in E minor, Berg's Sonata, Op. 1 and Webern's Variations Op. 27. In New York City, he presents the complete Bach Partitas, as part of Miller Theatre's Lunchtime Concert Series, and performs with world-renowned cellist Miklós Perényi at the 92nd Street Y. Mr. Hochman joins the eminent Tokyo String Quartet for a performance at Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Orchestral engagements include the Pittsburgh, Knoxville and Wheeling Symphony Orchestras, the Fort Wayne and Erie Philharmonics, and the Atlantic Festival Orchestra.
Ieva Jokubaviciute is known for her deep musical and emotional commitment to a wide range of repertoire. She performs regularly in the US and Europe, where critics have described her as possessing "razor-sharp intelligence and wit"' (The Washington Post) and as "elegant and engaging" (The Wall Street Journal). Over the last few seasons, Ieva made her Chicago Symphony debut at the Ravinia Festival with James Conlon and her Brazilian orchestral debut in Rio de Janeiro under the baton of Ligia Amadio. She has given solo recitals in Vilnius, Lithuania, Chicago, at Caspary Hall in New York, and at the Freer Gallery in Washington DC. In 2010, Labor Records will release her world premiere recordings of works, written in tribute to Alban Berg, coupled with her recordings of Berg's Opp. 1 & 2. A much sought after chamber musician, Ieva Jokubaviciute appeared at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium and has toured regularly with Musicians from Marlboro. Her piano trio Trio Cavatina made its New York City and Boston debuts in 2006 and won the 2009 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. She appears annually at international music festivals including Marlboro, Ravinia, Bard, Prussia Cove in England, and most recently at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany. Ms. Jokubaviciute received a 2006 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.
Andrius Zlabys has appeared widely throughout the world as soloist and chamber musician. A prizewinner at the 2003 Cleveland International Piano Competition, he performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Zlabys made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Symphony Orchestra in 2001 and has performed at prestigious venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Concertgebouw, Carnegie's Zankel and Weill halls, Teatro Colon, Wigmore Hall, Musikverein and Suntory Hall. His European engagements include Menuhin, Salzburg and Lockenhaus music festivals. In 1998, Mr.Zlabys toured in recital with the violinist Hilary Hahn. In 2000, Andrius Zlabys was a winner of Astral National Audtions in Philadelphia.
